Wood Working Finishes – Update

In an earlier post regarding wood finishes, I had stated that I’d be using either a polyurethane for a modern finish or a linseed oil/beeswax blend for a more traditional look.

Well, I lied. Or at least changed my mind.

From this point, unless otherwise requested for a commission or for a very specific purpose, I’ll be entirely switching to an amazing hemp seed oil from a supplier in Toronto. The hemp seed comes from Ontario, is free from chemical solvents, it’s water resistant (not water proof though!) and is entirely food safe. The finished pieces can be hand washed in warm soapy water and then dried. These should never be left to soak and never ever go in the dishwasher.

It does take a bit more “care and feeding” than other finishes, but the pluses of being an organic based, rather than solvent chemical based, makes it a much nicer choice in my opinion.

Whenever I take a commission, the option to use a modern chemical finish is, of course, an option. Just not one that I’d choose to use unless requested.
